Visions from the Farm is a perfect storm of ideas and inspired improvisation showcasing some of the hottest young jazz musicians around — there’s no other way to describe drummer Karl Schwonik’s latest, which features eight originals plus two songs composed by John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. With Gerry Hebert handling production and the awesome talents of Chris Andrew (piano), Kodi Hutchinson (bass) and Brent Mah (sax), it’d be hard for Schwonik to do wrong. Mah's sax is inspired, and the haunting edge to it in tracks like “Green Line” is perfectly mirrored by superb piano and bass from Andrew and Hutchinson. This is seamless ensemble work from the quartet — kudos to bandleader Schwonik. What a way to start 2010.
The Karl Schwonik Quartet will play at the Beat Niq on Friday, January 22.
