Jason Collett’s alt-folk has always been pretty, but with so many other artists spinning that same wheel, there was little besides his allegiance to Broken Social Scene to make him stand out. Until now. The ramshackle Rat a Tat Tat opens with a song so immersed in classic style that it wouldn’t be out of place in a Wes Anderson film. Collett’s ability to take his influences and make them his own have never served him better. There are hints of vintage Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, The Beatles and Bob Dylan, but they’ve all been filtered through a sharp modern sensibility. From synthy groove to piano pop, it’s the kind of album hipsters and their moms can listen to together — and for the record, that’s a good thing.
