Holy Fuck sure love the name Holy Fuck. After deciding on the band name, they chose to self-title their 2005 debut, and then named their two 2007 releases Holy Fuck EP and Holy Fuck LP. A lot of bands have gotten attention by using a gimmicky name, but Holy Fuck succeeded in a place where other bands have failed — they’ve actually made some interesting music to go along with it. Their output of catchy, danceable electronic music is impressive in itself, but even more so when you consider that they use no looping or programming to create their unique sound.
As with most electronic albums, LP isn’t particularly decisive when it comes to track changes. The pulsing “Frenchy’s” fades out and then back in as the soaring, pop-influenced “Lovely Allen.” While you may not be able to identify each song by name, the album is unique in that listening to its songs in order is of paramount importance. As far as instrumental albums go, this is about as close to a narrative as you’re ever going to get.
The only problem with LP is its length. While the band is innovative and unusual, their distinctive style of pulsing rhythms accompanied by various blips and beeps becomes grating over the course of 37 minutes. The Holy Fuck EP remains the best way to experience the band.
