Two years after its release, The Hold Steady’s Boys and Girls In America stands as one of the great rock records of the new millennium, which puts a lot of pressure on the band for their latest, Stay Positive. Kicking off with the unstoppable one-two punch of “Constructive Summer” and the single “Sequestered in Memphis,” they’re as strong as ever. Craig Finn’s addictive and desperate phrase twisting easily keeps pace with Tad Kubler’s massive riffs and Franz Nicolay’s classically trained piano playing. This is music by a band of music lovers, and it shows in every note. Even with the dubious inclusion of a harpsichord, Stay Positive is more hit than miss, and with three hidden tracks as good as anything officially on the album, this is rock-solid rock ’n’ roll.
