Hilotrons - Happymatic

Kelp Records

Ottawa, Ontario’s favourite sugary confection comes not from the legendary Canadian maple tree, but from an equally organic, if not so well-rooted source — Hilotrons. Defying convention at every turn, Hilotrons’ overriding imperative is to make you happy. Whatever it takes. And if that means money is no object, then money is no object. If digital disco doesn’t make you happy, then they’ll try orchestral skank, and if you don’t like that, maybe some pop-rock will get your mojo workin’. Rotating all three options in rapid succession, the aptly named title track is a quick-cycling but melodic romp with a cinematically inspired psychedelic vibe. Vocalist Mike Dubue channels all of your ’80s icons, ranging from Robert Smith to Rick Springfield as his bandmates do their best to keep up, jumping from genre to genre like honey bees on crack. From the sonic scramble of “Streets of Science” to the synth-infused capriciousness of “Teen Dreams,” Happymatic provides a solid hour of electro-groove escapism that can only end too soon.
