Heavy Trash - Midnight Soul Serenade

Fat Possum

Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray, the rock ’n’ blues tag-team at the heart of Heavy Trash, lay out 11 ever-lovin’ tracks for the band’s third outing. Spencer gets up to his old rockabilly antics early on, blaring out his unbridled lust on the opener, “Gee, I Really Love You.” “Bumble Bee” resonates with dynamic energy that verges on spastic, while the spicy “Pimento” simmers with instrumental intensity. Percussionist Sam Baker (Lambchop) gets his mojo working alongside hard-fingered acoustic bassist Simon Chardiet, who keeps this blue steel locomotive jamming on down the tracks on the bewitching “Bedevilment” and “That’s What Your Love Gets.” Notions of nostalgic romanticism are all but swept aside by Heavy Trash’s libidinous tendencies, as fire and fury take over where sentimentality leaves off. Midnight Soul Serenade offers up a heaping helping of rock ’n’ blues akin to those of legendary riffster Rev. Horton Heat, but with a decidedly House-of-Blues meets House-of-Mirrors twist.
