For most artists, the much maligned remix album comes across like a cash grab, contractual obligation or both. HEALTH has always been a different beast entirely, capable of bouncing back-and-forth between abrasive electronic noise-rock and poppy dancefloor-ready fare without raising eyebrows.
With the sequel to its 2008 remix collection, HEALTH//DISCO, the Los Angelenos have assembled a veritable who’s who of collaborators, as Javelin, Crystal Castles, Montreal’s CFCF and more all rework tracks from the band’s 2009 album, Get Color. As a front-to-back listen, it’s slightly stunted, with several songs appearing two or three times, yet there’s enough diversity between the breezy beats of CFCF’s “Before Tigers” and Salem’s haunted “In Violet” to keep things interesting. In the end, the woozy rave synths of Tobacco’s “Die Slow” steal the show, updating the original song’s wispy shoegaze-style vocals for a fresh facelift.
