Here's a strange thought: If the band from “way past Uranus” is celebrating its 25th anniversary with its 11th studio effort, Lust in Space, how old are the guys putting on rubber suits and singing about defiling your nether-regions? Maybe it's a good idea if they keep the masks on. Regardless, the recent swell of activity in Gwar's Slave Pit — re-signing with original label Metal Blade, landmark anniversary and yet another album — has clearly inspired front-thing Oderous Urungus and crew. Loud, boisterous and packed with fucking cool riffs, Lust in Space is easily the band's best, most cohesive and inspired effort since its glorious Scumdogs-America-Toilet Earth trilogy. Those keeping track will note that's a solid 15 years of crap we've endured in order to watch them flay and fuck a series of puppets onstage. Well, thanks to the gripping prowess of “The Price of Peace,” a sordid attack on “Damnation Under God” and disgustingly catchy chants of “Let Us Slay,” not only is the mighty Gwar back, but it’s proven that even after a quarter-century, these beastly buffoons can still be enthusiastically randy and whip out a solid punk-metal hybrid when the mood strikes.
