Gobble Gobble - Neon Graveyard

Bart Records

With his debut album as GOBBLE GOBBLE, Edmonton’s Cecil Frena has seemingly tossed in everything, including the kitchen sink. Guitars undulate around Game Boy bleeps, Rihanna-style synths blare as trash percussion crashes and there are even appearances of cello, trombone and classical piano for those paying close attention.

Over top of it all, Frena’s fuzzed-out vocals float along on instantly memorable melodies. His words have been purposefully obscured, but with each repeated spin, listeners will uncover such oddball images as stained-glass tendons, cloying ghosts and the skin of a 60-year-old priest. From the energetic skitter of “Meteor Eschat” to the alternate universe club hit “Alabaster Bodyworlds,” Neon Graveyard is an assured and highly enjoyable offering.

GOBBLE GOBBLE performs Friday, July 24 at The New Black Centre and Saturday, July 25 at The Marquee Room.
