Gob - Meurtos Vivos

Aquarius Records

It’s been four years since Vancouver’s Gob dropped the pop-punk masterpiece Foot in Mouth. Topped up with poppy self-loathing anthems, it’s one of the few albums in a disposable genre that actually has legs. That’s why Muertos Vivos is such a disappointment. Though technically a fine album, it suffers from lead-heavy seriousness. Growing up didn’t work for Sum 41 and it doesn’t work here. There’s no tongue-in-cheek irreverence, no singalongs, hell, there isn’t even a standout single. Maybe it’s a testament to Gob’s growth that the album’s best track, “Face the Ashes,” doesn’t even have a chorus — just a rugged bass riff and a delicious echo-heavy guitar lead. Buried three tracks from the end of the album, though, it’s too little too late. Muertos Vivos ends solidly on “Wake Up.” With clipped production and a simple structure, it’s a charmer, but the handclaps and synth tracks just beg for more of the same.
