Frightened Rabbit - Sing the Greys

FatCat

When the members of Frightened Rabbit entered the studio in their hometown of Glasgow in mid-2006, they all thought they were recording the third demo of what was at that point a three-year career. However, like some rock ’n’ roll fairy tale, the demo was so good that when FatCat Records heard it, they insisted on releasing it as is.

Sing the Greys is the kind of music that fans of Scottish indie rockers like Snow Patrol and The Delgados have come to love — songs that stay close enough to pop structure that they won’t offend a listener’s sensibilities, but far enough away to keep from stagnating into the same old drivel. Take the amazing "Yawns," for example. A simple guitar line and tambourine beat ride on top of a straightforward synth line, while singer Scott Hutchison moans with a mild accent about boys and girls yawning for different reasons. About two minutes in, the track begins an epic build, all the while maintaining the simple catchiness of its beginning. This knack for songwriting is present throughout the 11 tracks on the album. For a demo, it’s one of the most exciting recordings to emerge in a long while.
