Four Tet - There Is Love In You

Domino

Whether as a member of post-rock trio Fridge or in collaboration with jazz drummer Steve Reid, psychedelic weirdo-clan Sunburned Hand of the Man or Dubstep mystery-man Burial, Kieran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet) has only sporadically capitalized on what has always seemed like a colossal potential. That’s why “Love Cry,” the first single from There is Love in You — a nine-minute disco-Dubstep ear-boner that’s maybe the best thing Hebden’s ever done — seemed like such a bar-raiser.

It’d be difficult for the remainder of There is Love in You not to pale in comparison, but the other eight songs hold up excellently. Opener “Angel Echoes” tweaks a hiccupping vocal sample to wonderful effect, while “Circling” and “Plastic People” hypnotize and “She Just Likes to Fight” brings the proceedings to a dreamy pastoral close. It’s disappointing that Hebden decided against following his “Love Cry” muse, but only slightly.
