Elvis Presley - Elvis 75

RCA/Legacy

Released in time to commemorate Elvis’s 75th birthday this month, Elvis 75 takes a well-curated approach to the career of one of the most popular and influential pop singers of all time, juggling wilder hits like "Hound Dog" and "Heartbreak Hotel," with slightly lesser-known tracks like "That's Alright Mama" and "I Forgot to Remember to Forget." The MGM years are well-represented with "Jailhouse Rock," "Viva Las Vegas" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight."

Maybe it was guilt, maybe it was devotion, maybe it was the sense of an easy market, but Elvis spent a lot of time in his last years recording gospel songs, and no proper Elvis retrospective would be complete without them. Elvis 75 pays off with "How Great Thou Art" and "An American Trilogy," a medley of fabled southern folk songs. Recorded live at the Las Vegas Hilton with a show-stopping, over-the-top musical arrangement, “An American Trilogy” simultaneously demonstrates the control and range that Elvis possessed. Similarly, "Polk Salad Annie," also recorded live in Las Vegas, hints at the onstage excitement even late-stage Elvis could generate.
