No stranger to experimental music, Eluvium’s Mark Cooper crafts sparse, sombre arrangements rich in emotional intensity and evocative of the soothing Pacific Northwest he calls home. Relying heavily on piano, whispered sighs and layers of synth effects, Cooper builds a dense cloud of sound that listeners can float away on in tracks like "In Culmination." Other songs, like "Nightmare 5," encourage darker, more brooding thoughts, while the pop structures of "Making Up Minds" approach something one would find coming from post-punk revivalists The National. Similes manages to remain accessible while still pushing the boundaries of pop music.
