On its third full-length studio album, Danish pop group Efterklang has figured out exactly how to construct the perfect pop song. Not that it didn't have the ability before — both of the band’s previous releases for The Leaf Label had moments of genius. However, on 4AD debut Magic Chairs, the band has finally mastered consistency.
Efterklang's trademark pairing of lush orchestral instrumentation with hushed Scandinavian vocal harmonies has brought it this far, but on tracks such as "Alike," "Raincoats" and "Mirror Mirror," Efterklang has refined its syncopated rhythms to take what would be great songs and turn them into triumphs. These wins come with a price, however — Efterklang is taking fewer risks than it did earlier in its career. The question is: Can you blame them for being too perfect now that they've found the key?
