While it’d be a stretch to describe Edan’s Echo Party as “long awaited” by many, fans of the hip hop producer, MC and DJ’s 2005 opus Beauty and the Beat have surely been jonesing for a followup. Oddly enough, there’s nary a scrap of his own vocals on this joint, but it’s still an out-and-out banger.
Much like Shades of Blue, Madlib’s reworking of the Blue Note catalogue, Edan has dug through the crates of old-school rap, disco and funk labels such as Chocolate Star, Magic Records and P&P to patch together this 30-minute psychedelic party mix. Smudging the canvas with his own array of instruments, exaggerated echo effects and stuttering glitches, the result is a loving tribute to b-boy days gone by that also points to future frontiers.
