The Dresden Dolls - No, Virginia...

Roadrunner

If nothing else, The Dresden Dolls’ new album No, Virginia… proves they subscribe to the theory that honesty is the best policy. They could have easily passed it off as an album of brand new material without disclosing the album is largely outtakes from the sessions that produced 2006’s Yes, Virginia. The album sounds as complete and accessible as anything the Dolls have ever done.

“Dear Jenny” and “Night Reconnaissance” start the album off at a sprint, but it’s the later tracks, like the slower-paced “The Kill” and “Boston,” that show both the captivating theatricality and intricate storytelling of Amanda Palmer. Mixed in with the exquisite “Lonesome Organist Rapes Page Turner” and a cover of Psychedelic Furs’ “Pretty in Pink,” No, Virginia… grows well beyond expectations.

No matter how good a B-sides album is, its value is usually called into question, but there should be no such doubts about No, Virginia…. If anything, this album is valuable in helping us understand the band, if they’re willing to throw away such high-quality songs. The songs on No, Virginia… may have been an afterthought to them, but to fans they’ll stand alongside some of the band’s best work.
