The Donnas - Bitchin'

Purple Feather Records

If you ride your shtick long enough, it ceases to be shtick. When The Donnas first pulled out their axes, those who didn’t buy into their youthful exuberance quickly dismissed them as nothing more than wannabe rock chicks with feathered bangs, content to pillage their older brothers’ record collections. There may have been a certain truth to that, but 14 years and seven albums later, you can’t discount their staying power.

On Bitchin’, The Donnas continue the hair-metal mayhem they’ve been plying since the leap to the major labels. The riffs are gigantic, the girls have as much harmony as attitude and the production is so massive you’ll swear you’re sitting next to a wall of Marshall stacks when you spin the record. The members have all become more competent players, but let’s be honest — there isn’t one surprise on the album. If you gave up on Pat Benetar when everyone else did, you’ll wanna steer clear. However, if you like tight leather pants, arena rock solos and fist-pumping, take-no-prisoners anthems, then Bitchin’ is just what The Donnas ordered.
