It took the better part of a decade for Minnesota’s Dillinger Four to come up with their fourth full-length, Civil War. As these 11 shots of Jawbreaker -influenced punk rock and pop unfold, it’s abundantly clear where the time went. Upbeat and insightful, personal and poignant, the quartet delivers a set of tracks that make one nostalgic for the days of SoCal’s glory but also aspire to see it come full circle once again. When you hear the bounding energy of “Contemplate This on the Tree of Woe” or “Gainesville,” it’s a hint that that day may come sooner than expected. Explosive without being bombastic and catchy while avoiding the pitfalls of saccharine pointlessness, Civil War’s embrace through three-chord fury, metallic textures and the occasional offbeat piano ensures it is infinitely engaging.
