• More substance and intimacy from singer-songwriter.
The singer-songwriter genre rarely concerns itself with novelty and immediacy so much as longevity and substance. In this way, Damien Jurado’s songwriting has never emphasized musical innovation. Despite increased songwriting involvement from bandmates Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad, Caught In The Trees, doesn’t veer far from past offerings. The upbeat “Gillian Was A Horse” provides a misleading start to an album otherwise made up of the intimate songs listeners have come to expect from Jurado.
However, where Caught In The Trees doesn’t see Jurado pushing the boundaries of his music, it does not disappoint. Jurado is one of the best contemporary singer-songwriters. Caught In The Trees provides a compelling and satisfying listen.
