Presumably taking a lesson from Judas Priest’s Nostradamus, black metal stallions Cradle of Filth offer their own concept album based on a historical figure. However, unlike past releases, Cradle of Filth doesn’t need to put their warped twist on things to make the story macabre. They’ve found the perfect muse: Giles de Rais, a French nobleman executed for being a sexual deviant and satanic serial killer. Yet he was also religious icon Joan of Arc’s right hand man. Inspired and enthralled, the Filth truly drive their warped consciousness into Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder, maintaining their hyperactive and technically stunning black metal basis offset by operatic background vocals, moody keyboards and singer Dani Filth’s soaring wails. Moreover, their gruesome tale results in amusing titles for tracks including “Shat Out of Hell,” “Ten Leagues Beneath Contempt” and “Corpseflower.” Grim and cryptic yet compelling, this album is brilliant.
