Construction & Destruction - Mutatis Mutandis

The Quarantine

From the comfort of a farmhouse in pint-sized Port Greville, N.S., the duo of David Trenaman and Colleen Collins (a.k.a. Construction & Destruction) has been recording albums of consistently beguiling psych-tinted folk-rock over the last few years. Mutatis Mutandis is the pair’s fourth effort, and it’s an excellent introduction to the diverse C&D sound.

On first listen, the fuzzy stompers and slow burners featuring Trenaman on lead vocals may sound like a completely different band from the keys-backed numbers where Collins’s twisting falsetto takes the spotlight. However, when their voices come together — as on the twangy “Bonanza!” — the connecting threads reveal a one-of-a-kind union.

Amongst numerous highlights, “What’s Left Us” finds Collins trading in her twinkling synth for tinkling ivories, acoustic rocker “Nightshade” brings to mind the backwoods Pink Mountaintops, and “The Appeal of the Master Dredger” includes the simple but clever trick of tuning strings mid-strum. Call them the Maritime MV & EE.
