If it came complete with crackling vinyl skips and pops, this third full-length album from San Franciscan psychedelic rockers Citay could easily be mistaken as a long-lost favourite from your cool uncle’s attic. Though the album shows off the strengths of Citay’s seven-plus membership with a set of sun-kissed extended jams, it’s the jangly acoustic guitars of singer-songwriter Ezra Feinberg and producer-player Tim Green (also a member of heavy prog rockers The Fucking Champs) that fade into focus first — but the fuzzy electric solos are no slouch, either.
On longer songs like “Fortunate Sun,” epic opener “Careful With That Hat” and highlight “Hunter” (all stretching past seven minutes), Citay sounds like a North American Super Furry Animals or a Californian cousin of Black Mountain, bands also unafraid to settle into a groove and let it ride. Closing with a cover of Galaxie 500’s 1988 debut single “Tugboat,” Dream Get Together is another solid release from Indiana über label Dead Oceans, with Citay fitting comfortably amongst the label’s eclectic lineup of Akron/Family, Califone and Victoria’s Frog Eyes.
