Cass McCombs - Catacombs

Domino

Stripped-down effort makes for a laid-back masterpiece.

Cass McCombs’s previous releases have been very impressive, yet there has always been a hint of the musician trying to find his sound. On Catacombs, he’s nailed it.

The album strays from the usual lo-fi indie pop he was creating and gives the listener a more polished yet stripped-down effort. The instruments are sparse, or just repetitive drones, letting one focus on the songwriter’s vocals. This is a plus. It could be argued that what’s missing is more upbeat pop and that the songs all float in a sort of melancholy haze, but this creates a solid release that does not stray from its sound. It’s a perfect album for a lazy day.
