With their latest effort, Boys Night Out display a great deal of growth. The songs are still very pop-influenced and border on emo territory, but there’s a decided enhancement in confidence and experimental boldness, rather than the relatively straightforward scream-heavy tracks that comprised their previous disc. The melodic intricacies and guitar passages on this eponymous album show a quintet that continues to expand their watery version of Jawbreaker’s sound — virtually every track mixes rich, progressive rhythms with dynamic vocals.
Some songs do falter when they become overly saccharine, feeling overextended and languid. “The Push and Pull” seems more like a collection of great ideas that just don’t gel than a bona fide good song. These clunkers, however, are redeemed when followed by the chugging groove of “Up with Me” and other more direct affairs. To this extent, Boys Night Out (band and recording) don’t break the mould for modern rock, but they most certainly cut a nice chink out of its armour.
