There is something elusive about the German sense of cool, a blend of technical sophistication and emotional restraint. Frankfurt-based house duo Booka Shade demonstrates all the elegance of an experienced German tailor at work on a new suit. There are no wild embroidered flourishes — everything is cut close, revealing every structural contour as if the songs were engineered from scientific principles. Supple basslines are constructed along the delicately crafted warp and weft of melodic cloth. Muted colours dominate, and for an album named after two heat-emitting objects, there’s very little warmth. What some might call overly simplistic, others will revel in as an exemplar of modern minimalist principles, but, as with any fashion, cool is in the ear of the beholder.
