Bob Dylan - The Bootleg Series Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs - Rare and Unreleased 1989-2006

Columbia/Sony

Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series, a sporadically released collection of exquisitely packaged multi-disc sets, is as eclectic as any chunk of his rich and varied discography. Past editions have included rollicking live sets from his 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue, acoustic tracks from the early ’60s and the soundtrack to Martin Scorcese’s documentary No Direction Home. The newest double-disc set, Tell Tale Signs, showcases the mature Dylan, focusing on his work in the last two decades. While Dylan has released several albums during this period, Tell Tale Signs only culls tracks from the recording sessions surrounding three of them: 1989’s Oh Mercy, 2001’s Time Out of Mind and 2006’s Modern Times, as well as some soundtrack work.

The first disc features a softer, subtler Dylan, calling back to his folk roots. Highlights include the unreleased “Red River Shore,” which is so pretty, it’s a mystery why Dylan didn’t include it on Time Out of Mind. Another standout is an alternate (and much altered) take on Oh Mercy’s “Most of the Time,” which is arguably Dylan’s strongest single of the last 20 years. The second disc in the set offers up more live tracks, emphasizing Dylan’s recent infatuation with rowdy blues music.

While Tell Tale Signs might not be as appealing as some of the earlier Bootleg releases featuring classic Dylan tunes, it’s no less interesting than those previous sets. Dylan becomes increasingly fascinating as he gets older, and this package only illuminates the fact that one can’t count him out, even as he enters his golden years.
