Bettie Serveert - Pharmacy of Love

Palomine/Second Motion Records

With feedback, powerhouse guitars and double-time drums, Pharmacy of Love opens with Bettie Serveert’s most bombastic track in years. “Deny All,” like the rest of the album, relies on what has always been the band’s greatest strength — Carol van Dyk’s silky sweet vocals and Peter Visser’s searing guitar work. It’s a combination that served the group well through the alt-rock revolution of the early ’90s and during the band’s evolution to low-key glitch at the turn of the millennium. This return to distorted rock filtered through the band’s ear for pop makes Pharmacy’s compact collection of songs an instant charmer. Anthemic solos, heartbroken lyrics and a chugging half-time epic add texture to balance the hook. The end result it is a blissful 38-minute return to form.
