Ben Harper and Relentless 7 - Live from the Montreal International Jazz Festival

Virgin/EMI

Don't ask what rock ’n’ roller Ben Harper was doing at a jazz festival — it was obvious by the blistering guitar solo on the opening number, "Faster Slower Disappear Come Around," that the crowd and Harper were on the same page. With backing band Relentless 7 in tow, Harper pulls off a performance that easily evokes the sweaty, sultry Montreal night air. Despite the brilliance, including covers of Hendrix's "Red House" and Queen's "Under Pressure,” Harper's set list still finds his own songwriting struggling to master a pop hook. Fans will revel in the emotional intensity of the ballads and epics that stretch the better side of four minutes, but newcomers may find themselves struggling to go the distance.

"Rock 'n' roller"?! Are you kidding me? Harper wouldn't know rock 'n' roll if it kicked him in the crotch! His bastardized blues riffs have as much substance as Sheryl Crow's. His problem is he's all too concerned with 'pop hooks'. He sings too pretty to boot. Admittedly the guy can play guitar, but then again so can that clown Jack Johnson. Save it for the potheads Ben, please.

if you listen to the gamut of ben harper, especially older stuff like the 'live from mars' album or heard him live jamming on 'please bleed', 'faded' (his skills on lap steel guitar plays circles around jack johnson)-- it's apparent his rocknroll soul is still alive and well!
the easy road is to be known for one style & always remain there...
sign of a true artist that he re-invents himself in so many genres and changes it up all the time...
