Proving the Norwegians don’t have a stranglehold on the craziness of extreme metal, Polish death- and black metal goons Behemoth ravage and savage with Ezkaton, a seven-track EP that manages to do more damage in its modest 27 minutes than some dinosaurs can accomplish in over an hour (still looking in Metallica’s direction). And that’s with only one new track, “Qadosh.” The rest are culled from live performances featuring versions of “From the Pagan Vastlands,” “Decade Ov Therion” and “Chant For Ezkaton 2000 e.v.,” the latter a previously-released tune that’s been re-recorded for this effort. What’s most impressive though, is the band’s brutal take on The Ramones’ “I’m Not Jesus,” a track that transfers extraordinarily well to this far more abrasive musical style. Hammering and vitriolic, Ezkaton is beautifully extreme on every level.
