Three albums in, Baltimore’s Beach House — guitarist-keyboardist Alex Scally and vocalist-organist Victoria Legrand — maintains the hazy, soft-focus esthetic that has earned it a near-ubiquitous “dream-pop” tag. For Teen Dream, the duo has pumped up the musical proceedings ever so slightly, at time bringing to mind a female-fronted Fleet Foxes minus the medieval stuff or My Morning Jacket stripped of all Southern rock, all washed out with a Grizzly Bear Downy-soft wisp.
In case you hadn’t already guessed, Beach House’s bread and butter is easy listening indie-rock slow jams at their most melancholy. Teen Dream is a tad more upbeat in comparison to the band’s previous two releases, and while there are sprightly tunes here like “Walk in the Park,” “Lover of Mine” and first single “Norway,” it all remains glossed over with a prevailing sense of longing. Perhaps the most accurate comparison of all would be one to Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks theme.
