Ten years after its masterpiece debut, Remedy, it's clear Basement Jaxx isn’t the genre-bending radical it once was, and the duo’s peers have long since figured out how to imitate Jaxx’s edgy style and used it as a jumping point for their own sounds. Regardless, Scars is successful because of the tremendous talents Jaxx still possesses. It continues to craft interesting sounds by melding together edgy synths, house beats, gypsy rhythms and pop melodies. Where “Raindrops” and “Feelings Gone” are four-on-the-floor bangers in the grand Jaxx tradition, songs like “My Turn” and “A Possibility” show the true flexibility of the duo — not light-years ahead of everyone else anymore, but still keeping pace with the frontrunners.
