Baroness - Blue Record

Relapse

Considered not only its sophomore full-length but also the sister affair to 2007's Red Album, Blue Record spells out a Baroness that stretches even further into the vast, expansive territory of progressive sludge-doom metal. Still thick and undulating yet incredibly melodic and dynamic, the album's 12 songs range from ungainly bouts of intricate fury to subtle doses of alluring sensuality. It seems strange coming from men who look like they would rape your dog, but it's instantly allowable given the pleasurable journey. Moreover, unlike most of its contemporaries, with Blue Record, Baroness is able to vary the band’s delivery from drawn-out sagas such as six-plus-minute affair “Swollen and Halo” to the succinctness of “Blackpowder Orchard,” which barely hits the minute mark.

In relation to Red Album, this effort proves to be the perfect continuation, a far more encapsulating dose of Baroness that picks up where its predecessor left off. All in all, it ensures no sense of overdose or lacking on the band's part; ensures their track record of delivering brawny, uncharted metal remains stellar.

In my opinion, the best metal band out there. Forget labels of P.S.D.M. They are one hell of a band, and this new effort shows just how good they are. I just pray that I never hear them on the radio...
