With musical contributions from Will Oldham, Matt Sweeney, Andrew WK (on bass and drums) and a score of other notables, Baby Dee has some impressive endorsements on her Drag City debut. However, one listen to this album, along with a quick trip to YouTube to check out her and her over-sized tricycle in action, will likely result in wildly mixed reactions.
To begin with, Dee’s singing voice is easily as divisive as Antony’s or Joanna Newsom’s, with its off-key croons and unpredictable undulations. Couple that with a bat-shit crazy persona and a set of songs that sound like the score from a Tim Burton film or an off-off-off Broadway play, and you have quite the acquired taste.
Memorable tracks include “The Only Bones that Show,” “Big Titty Bee Girl (From Dino Town)” and the perfectly titled instrumental “A Christmas Jig for a Three-Legged Cat.” Clearly this is music on the far fringe, but even if you despise it on an initial spin, don’t throw out Baby with the bathwater.
