• This is the sound of a man hitting his stride.
Taking Bruce Springsteen’s workman-like songwriting esthetic and teaming up with veteran ’70s producer Tony Visconti, Escovedo has knocked out his best album to date. And knock it out he does. The best songs have a ragged edge that transforms his highly personal lyrics into something universally catchy. Escovedo’s raw vocal delivery rocks like that of The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn, while much of the album plays like Los Lobos on steroid — meaty riffs and powerhouse hooks. Is he getting better, or am I getting older? The answer is probably both, but the end result is no less spectacular.
