Albert Hammond Jr. - Como Te Llama?

Red Ink

Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has been more prolific in recent years as a solo artist than with the band that made him famous. From the 13 songs on his second album, Como Te Llama, it’s clear that Hammond hasn’t been thinking too much about his main project — while his solo work falls into the rock category, it’s a far cry from The Strokes’ sexy, stylized garage rock. On his own, Hammond is more of a slacker indie rocker, taking fuzzy cues from the likes of Guided By Voices.

Hammond’s breezy style is pleasant enough, and his songs are decent, but he’s toeing the fine line between laid-back and half-assed. Como Te Llama sounds a lot like the product of a well-to-do hipster and his well-to-do hipster friends getting together for a week to have some fun in the studio — which is exactly what it is. Still, with the fun pop single “GfC” and the relaxed instrumental “Spooky Couch,” Como Te Llama keeps it on the right side of enjoyable.
