Tenacious. It’s not the word a music publicist goes looking for when they’re digging for press quote, but it is the best way to describe the third album from Aidan Knight. For the record, that’s a compliment.
On first listen, Versicolour is a lush combo of sentimental Chris Martin delivery, orchestral pop arrangements and electrified Neil Young instincts. To be honest, not much more reveals itself over time, and yet it still proves to be oddly compelling. Knight’s got a knack for crescendo, and songs like “North East South West” blow open like a chinook wind. Sure, it’s a hackneyed simile, but it’s apt. Every song on Versicolour has the sound of wide-open space and fluid atmosphere. With a group of backing musicians armed with all manner of organic instruments, the magic of Knight’s songwriting keeps you coming back for more even if you aren’t entirely sure why.
