Sure, the Green Fools party at The Uptown sounds great, but it’s not the only game in town. So what’s a restless spirit to do? How about one of these:
Grave Gala — This is a great party, but definitely geared toward a crowd with a few more bills in their pockets. It’s the annual fundraiser for Calgary Opera and features music, food, bands, DJs and plenty of space in Hotel Arts. There is even a fire-performance by ArcFire at this year’s event. They get special mention because a certain former newscaster is in the troupe. Intrigued?
This year’s theme is Celtic Spirits Arise. Spectral entities will be wandering the party and enticing guests into all kinds of mischief. The bonus is that there are really nice hotel rooms just above your booze-soaked head, but best to book a room now.
And don’t slack on your costume. This event brings out Calgary’s creative class and the outfits are impressive.
Pumpkin carving — It’s cathartic. It’s nostalgic. Covering your hands in slimy guts while imagining what your creation will be. Pumpkin carving is an essential part of Halloween festivities.
Sure, you can sit at home in front of a scary movie and go to town on your gourd, but it’s so much more satisfying to do it in public.
Head to ArtSpot and test your mettle against a young artistic community on Thursday, October 28, starting at 6 p.m. You could win $100.
If you prefer ready access to a lot of booze, perhaps the Ship & Anchor is more to your liking. On Sunday, October 31, the Ship’s annual carve-up takes place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. For those with young-uns, this is a family-friendly event. Booze, kids, knives and pumpkins; what could go wrong?
Local Library — I leave the music happenings to that other editor, so I won’t mention that Foon Yap and the Roar, The Stolen Organ Family Band and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane will be playing on Saturday, October 30. What I will mention is the collaboratively built haunted house that you can wander through at Local Library.
If none of those hit you right, be sure to read Goings On in the music section for more ghoulish action.
