Order: Petro’s Special ($20.79). A medium 10-inch pizza with Sorriso pepperoni, mushrooms, Valbella beef salami and green peppers, all topped off with meat sauce. I chose the golden flax pizza crust, which is only available on Sophie’s 10-inch pies.

Crust: The golden flax crust is regular crust with some flax flour mixed in. Texturally, I really didn’t notice any difference, nor any additional flavours. Honestly, it seems like a gimmick to me, but if you’re looking to boost your omega-3 intake, there’s certainly no harm in trying this crust. It’s a Greek-ish style crust without being quite as dough-centric as others in the same category.

Sauce: The basic sauce didn’t leave a lasting impression as it quickly became masked by the toppings, cheese and meat sauce. The meat sauce was rich and flavourful, but I wish there was more than just a few dollops towards the middle of the pizza. I realize this would make it tougher — or impossible — to pick up each slice, but it’s a concession I would be willing to make.

Toppings: Like the spots of sauce, the bulk of the toppings were on the centre of the pizza, so much so that two or three bites into each slice, I was basically left eating a plain cheese pizza. While I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of choices, I wish the tiny cubes of salami were bigger. The distribution of the toppings was really disappointing, but also something that could be easily fixed.

Dining options: Eat in (limited seating), takeout or delivery.

Decision: Overall, this was a good pizza that showed hints of greatness. With better distribution of the ingredients and more meat sauce on top, I think this could be a supreme pizza. The flax crust was more hype than anything, so it’s up to individuals if they want to try it. Four out of six slices is a fair ranking for what I ate, but I sense Sophie’s could hit a five-slice score with a few simple tweaks.
