Pizza Pursuit - Sammy’s World’s Greatest Pizza

Order: Donair Special ($19.95). A 12-inch pizza with garlic sauce, donair meat, donair sauce, onions, diced tomatoes and lettuce.

Crust: A Greek-style thick crust that was well cooked and not doughy, so it worked well as a platform for the traditional donair toppings.

Sauce: Instead of tomato sauce, this pizza features a sweet and sticky donair sauce that was developed in the donair meat birthplace, Halifax.

Toppings: The pizza is cooked with garlic sauce, meat and cheese and then the donair sauce and produce are added post-oven. This creates a cool-versus-hot contrast you don’t get with most pies. While Sammy’s would not reveal its white sauce recipe — which I suspect is a combination of evaporated milk, sugar, vinegar and spices — they did confirm that both the sauce and meat are made in-house. The amount of shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions was also quite generous.

Dining options: Delivery, takeout or limited dine-in space at a counter.

Decision: The donair meat was well spiced and cut perfectly for pizza — thick enough to sink your teeth into, but not so thick it became chewy. Overall, I found the pizza to be very filling, so I suggest taking that into consideration when ordering. As much as I enjoyed this pizza, I think I would prefer a plain old donair, which Sammy’s also offers on its menu. If you’re torn between the two — or not a glutton like me — I have no issue suggesting that this is a viable option, but there are other tasty options as well. I’m giving this pizza four out of six slices.

Halifax is not the birthplace of donair meat, and if it was, then that tasty morsel of mystery meat would have never gained any traction, because the stuff on service there is absolute garbage. It is amazing what people will convince themselves is good food, when it clearly is not. Have some standards folks! Pizza in Calgary is absolute garbage.

Are you referring to doner kebabs or donairs? As far as I know, the latter originated in Halifax.

As for local pizza, is there anything local you *do* like? I'm always looking for suggestions!

Always curious,

Darell

Hi Darell, the Turks have been serving up doners since the days of the Ottomans, and the Germans have only perfected it. The version associated with Halifax is well, associated with Halifax and is rather gross from experience - akin to fried dog meat (although I have no experience in that delicacy). Donairs in Ottawa are tops for me.

As for local pizza? I had a great pie at Matador Pizza a few years ago. I still think of it. I am positive it would be worth the review.
