Order: The Guru ($21.50). A 14-inch pizza topped with butter chicken sauce, chicken, mozzarella, red onions, sweet peppers, mango chutney and fresh cilantro served on 50 per cent whole wheat thin crust.
Crust: I’m not saying whole wheat blend pizza dough doesn’t have potential to be good, but Avatara’s wasn’t. I found the supposedly thin crust to be dense and chewy. I understand that they’re trying to offer a healthier choice, but I would rather eat an awesome pizza than a good-for-me pizza. Gluten-free options are also available.
Sauce: Instead of tomato sauce, this pizza is based with a familiar blend of Indian spices. While I consider myself to be somewhat picky when it comes to butter chicken, I really enjoyed Avatara’s blend and would be happy to have it as either the real dish or on this pizza again.
Toppings: When I think of butter chicken, I envision large chunks of meat, not the smaller shreds that were used on this pizza. To be fair though, giant pieces wouldn’t have worked. The ingredients were nicely spread out across the pie so that you could sample a little bit of everything in each bite without it being just layered. The mango chutney seemed to be nothing more than a glaze on top, which I found disappointing. Lastly, I really enjoyed the fresh cilantro. I’ve been on a big basil kick lately and it was a nice change.
Dining options: Pickup or delivery.
Decision: Based on Avatara’s descriptor and a few personal recommendations, I had really high hopes for this pizza. If I sound really down on this pizza, I don’t mean to be. It’s just that I expected this pizza to be better than it is. Losing the whole wheat — or including a regular crust option — would make a huge difference for me. I also think a more liberal distribution of meat and a lot more chutney would bump up my score significantly. As things stand, this one only gets three out of six slices, but it has potential for more.
