The most important meal of the day

Get a giant bellyful of breakfast at Eat! Eat!

Find It...

There's something you should know about me: I love breakfast. Hands-down, it's my favourite meal of the day.

There's something else you should know about me: I'm lazy. And because I'm lazy, I don't really go too crazy with the whole breakfast thing during weekdays. So, on the weekends, I like to go all out.

I decided it was time to head on down to Eat! Eat! in Inglewood. I'd driven by a bunch of times and based on the name alone, was intrigued. Upon entering the small eatery, I was not disappointed. Eat! Eat!'s atmosphere is as inviting as its clever name, and on a crisp Sunday morning, its yellow walls, local artwork (all for sale) and seating options (smaller tables for one or two, and larger tables and even couch seating for larger groups) gave the comfortable feeling of being invited to a friend's for brunch. We managed to snag the last available table and were greeted by the friendly staff.

Eat! Eat! is also child-friendly. We had a two-year-old in tow and he was met with smiles, his own high chair, a colouring book and crayons immediately upon arrival.

I ordered a cup of coffee right away and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived served in a holiday mug. The holiday touches continued when our meals arrived adorned with miniature candy canes as part of the garnish.

We decided to start things off with the large fruit salad ($7) to share. Quite often, fruit salad is either swimming in sugary syrup or contains nothing but melon, but this was not the case at Eat! Eat! The selection of fruit was fresh and juicy, mixing the juices of the melons, pears, grapes and oranges, and letting the natural flavours speak for themselves.

We ordered the porridge ($4) for the little guy, and it was served with milk and brown sugar on the side. The portion was generous, not at all lumpy and would definitely be a good option on a cold winter day to warm up your insides. Other healthful options on the menu include granola and yogurt, bagels and cream cheese and a tasty sounding eggwich.

Although we were there for breakfast, the lunch and dinner options also sounded tempting. On the entire menu, not one item is priced higher than $10, a rarity nowadays.

I opted for the standard build-your-own three-egg omelet ($10) that offers a variety of fillings — ham, onions, mushrooms, sausages, spinach, salsa, red peppers, bacon, feta, tomatoes, cheese or hot peppers. I went for a sausage, cheese, salsa and bacon combo and, overall, it was really good, with a generous offering of each of the ingredients, and a choice of several types of bread (toasted, of course). Sourdough complemented the meal nicely. However, I wasn't as fond of the hashbrowns that were dry, overcooked and quite tasteless. It seemed as though they might not have been made fresh that morning.

My guest ordered the special of the day — and what I should have ordered — blueberry cheesecake-stuffed French toast ($9). While it sounded good, I assumed that it might be a little sweet for my personal taste. Boy, was I wrong about that one. Luckily, I pulled the "you-have-to-let-me-sample-it-since-I'm-the-food-reviewer" card, and my guest acquiesced by sharing a large portion of her breakfast with me. Again, the portion was generous and there was plenty to share. The blueberry and cream cheese filling was sweet but not overly so, and the toast itself was Texas-sized, with a nice balance of a soft crispness to the outside while remaining fluffy on the inside. It came with maple-pecan butter and syrup on the side — Eat! Eat!'s signature accoutrement for all pancake and French toast options on the menu. To round things out, a side of sausage ($3) was also ordered.

I would recommend Eat! Eat! as a great place for brunch the next time you need a fix and, like me, are far too lazy to make it yourself.
