Easy eatin over in the breakfast district

Delicious morning meals in the northeast

It’s official. Calgary has a breakfast district. Stretching along Edmonton Trail, starting at AKA Wine Bar on Seven Ave. N.E. and extending to Big Fish on 11th Ave. N.E., weekend warriors can now enjoy a great range of spots serving awesome breakfasts. The latest entrant to the breakfast club is Over Easy, a bright and cozy spot in the old Country Kitchen location.

Arriving at around 10 a.m. on a Sunday, my boyfriend and I wait just a few moments before being seated at a comfy booth beside the open kitchen. Framed by colourful mosaic tile, this window gives guests a peek at the hustle of Over Easy’s bustling kitchen team.

Warmly greeted by our server, we order a cup of the Frog Friendly Organic house brew ($2.49) and a latte ($3.49). Dusted with cinnamon, the latte isn’t sensational, but it certainly isn’t terrible either.

There are some tough decisions when it comes to ordering. The huevos del rancho with homemade salsa looks delicious ($9.99), as does the ultimate crunchy French toast ($9.49) featuring shaved almonds, caramel sauce and McKay’s vanilla ice cream.

After much deliberation, my boyfriend goes with the Canadian eh eggs benny ($9.89), a hollandaise-free eggs Benedict served with two poached eggs, peameal bacon and warm maple syrup. The absence of hollandaise makes the dish surprisingly light, while offering a wicked mix of sweet and salty sensations — perfect for any self-respecting Canuck who likes their bacon and maple to mingle.

I have the uova alla Toscana ($9.89), a delectable plate featuring two poached eggs nestled atop toasted rye with oven-roasted cherry tomatoes and blanketed with smoked prosciutto. The dish sings to me with a fantastic mix of tart and sweet that goes well with Over Easy’s spectacular home fries — crisp, thick-cut potatoes dusted with herbs.

Fresh and generous slices of pineapple, grapefruit and honeydew came on the side of both dishes. I have to thank Over Easy for finally providing me with fruit I actually want to eat with my breakfast.

To get a full picture of the Over Easy menu, we also try the blueberry pancakes ($8.99). These flapjacks are divine — light, fluffy, crisp, and topped with fresh blueberries. You basically can’t go wrong with this menu.

Beyond breakfast, the kitchen also serves a handful of lunch options, from burgers and sandwiches to a small selection of pastas. It’s clear from the menu that Over Easy is making a good effort to go local with ingredients such as Paolini’s Sausage & Meat and the decision to only offer Big Rock beer on their drink list. Yes, they’re licensed, too.

I’ll definitely be making return trips to Over Easy. The eclectic space is light-hearted and jovial, the staff is friendly and accommodating, and there are many more dishes I can’t wait to sample.
