The Garrison Pub & Eatery
2040 42 Ave. S.W.
Burger: The Garrison Burger ($14.99) — a house-ground beef patty on a lightly toasted sesame seed bun topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions, bacon, ham, cheddar cheese, mustard, mayo, pickles, lettuce and tomatoes.
Sides: Choice of fries, soup of the day, Caesar or garden salad, rice, mashed potatoes or coleslaw. Add gravy, poutine, fresh veggies with dip, onion rings or sweet potato fries for $1.50 to $3.99.
Atmosphere: A simple pub with a military theme, it’s tastefully decorated with photos, artwork and ammunition boxes. One doesn't feel like they’re eating at a military base.
Menu: Basic pub grub with a few interesting twists such as Moroccan lamb spring rolls, a Monte Cristo sandwich and crispy noodle prawns. Pizzas are war-themed, with names such as Passchendaele Pineapple and The Highlander.
Decision: When I started writing this weekly battle of the beef, I thought the pubs would come out on top. While not every pub has been outstanding, this one certainly was. One small detail I like is that salt and pepper were sprinkled on the tomatoes — something I would do at home, but I don't remember ever seeing it while eating out.
Initially, I was concerned that there were too many toppings, but the abundance of accessories worked. While nothing specifically stood out, each bite was packed with great flavour, and the entire cast of ingredients helped make this burger a winner.
Next up: Moose McGuire’s Beanery & Bar, 1941 Uxbridge Drive N.W.
