Burger: Spring Creek Ranch beef burger ($18), served on a toasted poppy and sesame seed bun with melted gouda cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, tomato, lettuce, red onion, mayo and dill pickle.
Sides: Choice of fries, house or Caesar salad. The fries are super-skinny frites style and darn good.
Atmosphere: Located in the Palliser, you’re probably expecting me to say it was fancy. Well, that’s exactly what it is. With giant archways, brass-covered tables and the like, the atmosphere doesn’t exactly scream: “We are going to serve you amazing burgers!” Unfortunately, the Oak Room meets expectations.
Menu: Mondays is Death By Chocolate night, featuring everything and anything chocolate. The balance of the bar menu offers typical salads, a tapas section, all-you-can-eat clam chowder and a few other options. There are also bison, lamb and veggie burgers available.
Decision: I was quite excited about the mention of an eight-ounce patty made from Spring Creek beef. Much to my chagrin, I found the patty to be rubbery, and that alone was enough to ruin the experience. In all fairness, it was juicy and obviously decent in size, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why restaurants continue to offer up these spongy pucks when it’s not that hard to serve a decent handmade patty. The remainder of the burger was really quite good, and I like the idea of two types of onions on one burger, but it really wasn’t enough to save this one
