Burger Hunt

Crush

Burger: Crush’s Grilled Burger - 1/2 lb-ground Canadian prime rib served with lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard and a pickle spear ($13).

Sides: Your call: Kennebec French fries, Caesar or garden salad, edamame beans, meshi rice, roasted vegetables, yam fries or red-skinned mashed potatoes.

Atmosphere: Dubbed a “socialhouse,” Crush floats the line between lounge and restaurant, which it does well.

Menu: Crush’s menu features 28-day aged Angus steaks, appetizers and lighter fare, as well as fish, chicken, sandwich and pizza options for mains. It has a modest selection that works in the sophisticated environment.

Decision: Wow. The burger was really good. I ordered mine as presented on the menu. For $2, you can add any of the following: sautéed mushrooms or onions, peppered bacon, avocado and a host of cheeses, including Swiss, aged cheddar, smoked provolone, jalapeno jack or Monterey jack. Any of those options would also work, I’m sure, but this burger does not need accessories. The patty was delicious, albeit just slightly dryer than I prefer. The produce was fresh and crisp, and the amount of mustard and mayonnaise was conservative enough that things weren’t messy, but generous enough to add flavour and moisture. This burger is a front-runner. I also have to give a shout out to the Kennebec fries — the best fries I’ve had in a long time.

Next up: White Spot for the double double burger. Various locations in Calgary.
