Burger: Ship burger, loaded ($8.95) — a toasted sesame seed kaiser bun, patty, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayo, cheddar, bacon and mushrooms. A basic version, sans cheese, bacon and mushrooms, is also available ($6.95).
Sides: Choice of soup, salad or fries.
Atmosphere: The Ship is one of my all-time favourite establishments, not only in Calgary, but in Canada. It's really just a pub like so many others, but I've always found there to be a great energy in the room. It also appears to have more draft taps than staff... and a good number of people work there.
Menu: Pub fare, plus options such as pasta, seafood and butter chicken.
Decision: I can't believe I almost missed this one. I've been so busy worrying about trying new burgers during my hunt, that I almost skipped this one — a burger that I’ve munched down many times before. And I'm pleased to report that it was just as good as I remember it. The patty was well seasoned and had an above average amount of pepper, which I liked. The produce was crisp and fresh, and the bacon thick and cooked just right. It really makes sense when you think about it: places that serve breakfast often have better bacon on the burgers. In its price range, this burger is a champ and is consistent in both presentation and quality.
Next Up: The Burger Hunt column will wrap up next week with a Best Of recap.
