Burger: House burger ($10.75) — a homemade patty on a toasted sesame seed bun with grilled mushrooms, onions, bacon and cheese, garnished with relish, mustard, mayo, lettuce and tomato.
Sides: Fries, soup or salad for an additional $3. If you're there before 11 a.m., don't fret, the Chuckwagon will gladly cook you a burger and substitute some hashbrowns for the fries.
Atmosphere: Located in bustling downtown Turner Valley, Chuckwagon Cafe is as quaint as you’d imagine. The walls are decked out in wood panelling and covered in cowboy art. It's a welcoming room accented with touches such as an old cast iron stove. There's also a long counter you can belly up to if that's more your style.
Menu: The Chuckwagon only does all-day breakfast and lunch, and they do both really well. In an admirable display of quality control, Terry Myhre, the cafe's owner, raises all of the beef himself. All of the meat used is free of any added growth hormones and is dry-aged for anywhere between 24 and 28 days. The restaurant also does over-the-counter meat sales.
Decision: Maybe I'm just buying into the hype, but I swear this burger was beefier than most. The patty was absolutely top-notch and, luckily, was surrounded by good, quality accessories. The produce was both fresh and chilled. The mushrooms, bacon, onions and cheese didn't overwhelm things, the bun was nicely toasted and, lastly, the condiments were doled out in good proportion.
I must highlight the relish. This was not the usual green stuff. It was a fresh red relish, and it was darn good. It was sweet and spicy — literally, several spices were clearly visible. I liken it to the bow that completes a nice gift. It would have been OK without it, but it was so much better after the relish addition.
Treat yourself to a drive outside the city and try this one out.
