Burger Hunt

Original Joe's

Burger: Kona Burger ($13.99) — a toasted sesame seed Kaiser bun supports a charbroiled beef patty that's brushed with teriyaki sauce and topped with fresh grilled pineapple, peppered bacon and melted mozzarella cheese as well as mayo, lettuce, tomato and red onion. Add cheddar, provolone or Swiss cheese, mushrooms, jalapenos, banana peppers or guacamole for 99 cents each. Add an extra patty for $3.99.

Sides: Your choice of two of the following: fries (with gravy or dill dip), mixed greens, mango pasta salad, garlic mashed potatoes with gravy, fresh vegetables and dip, Caesar salad or honey coleslaw. Upgrades are roasted vegetables (99 cents), sweet potato fries ($1.99) or poutine ($1.99).

Atmosphere: Original Joe's is somewhere between a restaurant and a bar, but it should be pointed out that none of the Calgary locations allow minors. I can't speak for all locations, but I found the service to be kind of annoying. I was called boss, buddy and pal during a reasonably short visit. Ugh.

Menu: Typical of a chain-pub or restaurant — appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, pizzas, pasta and entrees. There are seven different burgers (four beef, two chicken and one vegetarian) on the menu and the test menu currently features sliders.

Decision: The pineapple ring was noticeably smaller than the patty and was not centred. As a result, I didn't taste any pineapple until the second half of my burger. I found the teriyaki sauce was expectedly sweet and sticky. This wasn’t my favourite burger, but it all comes down to personal taste. If sweet Asian add-ons are your cup of tea, I think this burger would be a good match for you.

Hmm. White male seeks sweet Asian patty. I think I may have just invented a burger matchmaking service. Let me know if I can help hook you up.

Next up: Balkan Deli & Restaurant, 2-6115 4 St. S.E.
