Burger: Amsterdam Rhino burger ($13.49). A toasted bun with smoked jalapeno aioli, roasted red peppers, butter leaf lettuce, tomatoes and a pickle speared on top.

Sides: Choice of fries, soup, house or caesar salad. The ketchup that came with my fries was amazing. I'm not a huge ketchup guy, but this was superb.

Atmosphere: A great place to grab a drink and some food after work, the Rhino gets busy around 9 p.m. on the weekends.

Menu: There are some really cool ideas afoot at Amsterdam Rhino. The menu has some interesting twists on familiar options such as pulled pork on a cinnamon brioche, ox tongue pastrami on rye or three sizes of poutine with a slew of optional toppings including steak, fried eggs or a pork chop. There's whole pig terrine, potted duck liver pâté or a meat and sausage plate. Heck, I almost felt bad ordering my burger. In addition, wings are 15 cents during happy hour, and the cheddar-jalapeno-bacon variety is incredible.

Decision: I had a hard time picking which of the three main burgers to try, but after some discussion, opted for Rhino’s namesake. I was happy with my choice and suspect the outcome would have been similar with either of the others. A generous amount of aioli was smothered on a crusty bun with a nice, soft interior. The sauce held up well against the patty, which had great texture and flavour — it reminded me of a homemade backyard burger, and that's a good thing. The tomatoes were a bit mushy, but not remove-from-the-burger-altogether mushy. I will head back for this one again, or one of the others on the menu, without hesitation. I just have to convince myself to stray from the other temptations.
